Objectives

In September 2022, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust went live with the Epic Electronic Patient Record (EPR), in a Trust-wide transformation programme, known as Hive.

This followed over two years of preparation, under the largest transformation programme, undertaken by the largest NHS Trust. The Hive project involved colleagues from all areas of the organisation and also required contribution of numerous colleagues and organisations outside Trust.

In December 2021, Attain were requested to support the Hive programme, in particular the transformation aspects that were required. A number of colleagues from Attain joined the Hive programme and contributed significantly in the preparation before Go -Live, during the Go-Live event, and during the stabilisation period.

What we did

Attain supported the Hive Programme and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust to implement their Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system across 10 hospital sites. Attain’s role has to lead the change management for key modules, engaging with clinical and operational teams, and to interact with the technical developers from EPIC to facilitate successful implementation.

The Attain team worked in a blended team with the MFT and EPIC teams to deliver a wide range of transformation projects, including:

  • Develop a single chemotherapy pathway across all sites to ensure improved clinical efficiency and consistency of approach
  • Development of 642 elective surgery pathways across all sites
  • Led engagement with clinical teams for maternity, inpatient, day case, pharmacy, laboratories, imaging services to be prepared for new ways of working with new EPR
  • Standardising all Outpatient appointment letters and SMS notifications across the Trust so all clinics use a standard set of letter and SMS templates

Our impact

The Go-Live of this EPR has been described by international observers as – “as smooth a go-live anywhere”.

Attain colleagues led or contributed to most of the transformation programmes that were required, both from a high level planning perspective and also dealing with clinical and operational teams and individual colleagues.

“It is clear that MFT relied upon and benefitted greatly from this contribution and we really value the expertise, strong worth ethic and deep professionalism that Attain demonstrated throughout their period of time with us.”
