Dr. Shirani Rajapaksa talks about her background and why she joined Attain…
Tell us a little bit about yourself
I have over 12 years’ experience working in the healthcare sector, where I started my career as a NHS doctor and trained as a Haematology Specialist Registrar. Six years ago I decided to move into global health and management consulting to learn more about the non-clinical aspects of healthcare business management, strategic planning and health care system development.
Since then I have worked internationally at government, regional and organisational levels on strategic projects, service transformation and redesign across primary, community and acute sectors in public and private healthcare with a particular interest in an evidence-based approach and application to strategic development.
How have your first 30 days been at Attain?
I’ve had a lovely warm welcome from the team since joining Attain. I was actually able to attend both a team meeting and a whole company meeting within the first two weeks, which worked out well and allowed me to meet most of my new colleagues early on.
In terms of work, I am already leading a project on an Acute Provider client site and have a great team of Attain staff working with me. It’s been really nice to have such a positive reception towards me and the Attain team from the client compared to some experiences I’ve had at other firms.
It feels to me like I have joined Attain at a really exciting time when the company is shifting and changing in response to market demands.
What attracted you to Attain?
The emphasis on partnering with clients to deliver value and impactful change. Working for an organisation that genuinely wants to make a difference, which is sadly not as common as you’d expect within the consulting sector. Furthermore the values of the company mirrored my own, not only in terms of serving the NHS, but in supporting the wellbeing of team members across the organisation.
What’s the best thing about being employed with Attain?
Without a doubt the people; Attain has had great success in recruiting excellent people. Many have NHS/LA backgrounds and middle/senior level experience. I could tell that clients immediately trust us more rather than seeing us as “the suits” who leave behind a pretty report that ends up gathering dust once they leave
What do you hope the future brings for you with Attain?
I hope I can help in bringing about change on the ground and empowerment to the staff responsible for bringing about change in what is a difficult, constrained yet optimal time for innovation and planning for the future.
I also hope that I can support the company as it heads out in a new and exciting direction!
