Ben Gray talks to us about his first 30 days at Attain

#Tell us a little bit about yourself

The majority of my career has been spent in the NHS after joining through the National Finance Training Scheme. I quickly moved into acute operational roles and have worked in areas such as emergency medicine, surgery and more exotic specialities such as transplantation. Through a desire to broaden my experiences and work with different parts of the NHS, I joined a consultancy firm in 2014 and subsequently moved to Attain in October 2017.

I still consider myself a ‘NHS person’ and have a real passion for the health service and truly believe it is one of the great institutions of the world. Therefore, I always want to ensure that I’m making a difference and adding value to the NHS regardless of the role I’m in.

How have your first 30 days been at Attain?

I’ve been amazed at just how quickly the first 30 days have gone. I think this is mainly due to starting on a fantastic project very early on that has kept me very busy, which is great. You know the saying… time flies when you’re having fun!

I was also really fortunate that we had a company meeting at the end of my second week so it gave me the perfect way to meet many of my new colleagues.

What attracted you to Attain?

It goes back to me still considering myself a ‘NHS person’. I wanted to work with a firm that was values based and had the best interests of the NHS at its heart, and I believe Attain has that.

I also think Attain offers the right mix between a more typical consultancy and advisory practice and actual project delivery. Given my background I like getting my sleeves rolled up and with Attain’s focus on the delivery of change I hope I’ll get the right mix of experiences and challenges.

What’s the best thing about being employed with Attain?

It gets said by everyone, but it still surprised me how much of a team culture Attain has. Given how geographically disparate the team is, I’m amazed by the comradery across people and how everyone is always eager, almost pushing, to help you at every turn.

I also came to Attain keen to grow as a professional and even within the first 30 days I’ve been pleasantly surprised how proactive and supportive of that the company has been.

Add on to that genuinely interesting and challenging work and it’s been a very impressive start.

What do you hope the future brings for you with Attain?

More of the same to be honest. Hopefully I’ll to have the opportunity to continue my personal development while I make a tangible contribution to Attain as they support the NHS into the future.
