Bill Aiken talks about his background and why he joined Attain

Bill Aiken photoTell us a little bit about yourself

I have worked in both the public and private sectors in my career. I qualified and worked as a management accountant, and then moved into a series of roles in the private sector including management consultancy.

My work lies primarily in supporting clients to achieve transformational shifts in their strategy, finances and ways of working. Much of my work has been in helping the public sector to maintain the traditional public-sector ethos and values whilst working within the new commercial imperative. I have been privileged to work with a range of clients including the NHS, MoD, Home Office, FCO, Police forces, the European Commission, and private sector firms in such fields as engineering, communications, sport and consulting. Within the NHS I have worked over the past five years with a range of acute providers, CCGs and CSUs, and it is the NHS where I now focus my energies.

I also love helping people develop their skills, knowledge and careers through training and coaching.

How have your first 30 days been at Attain?

Very busy and very rewarding. My primary focus is looking at strategy and organisational change, including the future of corporate services functions. I am hoping to bring my experience across the wider public and private sector to bear on this. I am also helping out on our own back office improvement: another example of practicing what we preach!

What attracted you to Attain?

That’s easy. Having been engaged with Attain on a number of projects as an Associate, I enjoyed the experience so much that I decided to join full-time. I was massively impressed with the quality of the people, the knowledge within the firm and the transparent approach to working with clients.

What’s the best thing about being employed with Attain?

The positive and supportive attitude from every single person I have met. It is very satisfying that the experience I can bring is a good fit to what we do, but that I can also add to the range of skills and competences within the firm. At the end of the day every single person’s focus is about improving health and wellbeing through working with the NHS. I can’t think of a better motivator than that.

What do you hope the future brings for you with Attain?

More of the same, but also a chance to broaden my experience and develop my skills. You are never too old to learn!
